Jamie Whincup provided the history but Garth Tander and Scott McLaughlin brought the drama in a V8 Supercars meet to remember on Phillip Island.

With the finish line in sight, Tander ran out of fuel to hand McLaughlin his second win of the weekend and fourth of the season in a stunning conclusion to the meet.

On Saturday, Whincup confirmed his fourth-straight and record sixth championship with success in one of two 100 kilometre races, stretching his lead to a mathematically secure position.

But with his party postponed until he receives the trophy at the season-ending Homebush meet in Sydney next month, it was McLaughlin who celebrated hardest.

Tander, whose fine driving propelled him from fourth on the grid to a lead, withstood McLaughlin’s advances for thirty laps and looked to have a first win since Townsville in the bag.

As he advanced onto the final straight his car coughed and spluttered, yielding the race lead in the last second of the race.

The looks on the faces of Tander’s pit-team as they climbed down from the fence ready to celebrate the win said it all.

“That’s the way the cookie crumbles sometimes,” Tander said.

“The boys told me it was going to be really tight on the last lap, and it was probably 100 metres the wrong side of the line.”

The New Zealander gave his Volvo the winning treatment, with burnouts in front of a shell-shocked crowd.

McLaughlin’s previous race wins had come mainly from leading the race, but he said he didn’t mind coming from behind.

“I reckon that’s much better, it’s cool, I reckon that’s sick,” he said.

“I feel sorry for Garth but I’m pretty ecstatic.

“Our (car) was really good, and I just kept pushing on.”

Mark Winterbottom took third after holding out Whincup for another podium.

McLaughlin’s win brought him level with Winterbottom and fifth-placed Shane van Gisbergen with four race wins for the season, behind only Whincup’s 12.

The 21-year-old star, who moved to fifth in the championship, said his success this year had shocked even himself.

“That surprises me, I didn’t realise that stat – it’s pretty cool,” he said.

“We’re building up for next year… we’re pushing on as hard as we can and learning every lap we do.

“I’ll be aiming to be consistent and reliable across the 2015 season but luck has to come your way as well.” RESULTS: V8 Supercars championship race 35, Phillip Island 1 – Scott McLaughlin (Volvo)
