The all-conquering Kookaburras’ depth will be put to the test when they defend their Champions Trophy hockey title in India, with skipper Mark Knowles and five-time World Player of the Year Jamie Dwyer ruled out due to injury.

Coach Graham Reid on Monday unveiled an 18-strong squad for the December 6-14 tournament, boasting 11 World Cup winners and 11 Commonwealth Games gold medallists.

However, it was missing their two biggest names after Knowles and Dwyer succumbed to foot injuries.

It is another blow for Dwyer, who shares the Australian games record with Jay Stacy on 321.

Dwyer, 35, has not played for the national team since being overlooked for the Glasgow Commonwealth Games in June.

He then suffered a foot ligament injury, ruling him out of the four-Test series against India in Perth.

Joel Carroll (foot) and Kieran Govers (hip) were also not considered for the Champions Trophy.

However, Reid did welcome back forward Russell Ford who missed the World Cup and Commonwealth Games with a calf tear.

Veteran defender Fergus Kavanagh has also been recalled to the squad.

Youngsters Tom Craig, Matthew Dawson and Flynn Ogilvie will be blooded at their first Champions Trophy after making their international debuts earlier this month in the series against India.

The Kookaburras have won the past five Champions Trophy titles.

They start their campaign against England on December 6 at Bhubaneswar.

Aust squad: Daniel Beale, Chris Ciriello, Andrew Charter, Tom Craig, Matthew Dawson, Tim Deavin, Russell Ford, Matt Gohdes, Jeremy Hayward, Fergus Kavanagh, Tyler Lovell, Eddie Ockenden, Flynn Ogilvie, Simon Orchard, Glenn Simpson, Jake Whetton, Tristan White, Aran Zalewski.
