Indigenous rights protesters have burned six Australian flags and labelled police murderers at a provocative rally on the sidelines of the Brisbane G20 summit.

The group was incensed by comments from Prime Minister Tony Abbott this week regarding Australia’s history, in which he referred to the country as being “nothing but bush” before the arrival of the first fleet.

“It wasn’t desolate. It was built on the blood and bones of our warriors,” activist Wayne Wharton told the rally gathered in a Brisbane city park on Sunday.

In a series of increasingly passionate speeches, protesters directly addressed the large number of officers keeping watch nearby, criticising them for carrying weapons.

“How many black fellas have you killed this week?” teenager Ruby Wharton asked.

“How many black fellas have you locked up for doing nothing wrong?”

The group burned six Australian flags to chants of “resist, revive, decolonise”.

“The flag represents our oppression!” one man yelled into the microphone. “The flag represents our constitution. We have to burn the flag!”

Protesters braved sweltering conditions and marched to Musgrave Park in South Brisbane, yelling “murderers” and “blood’s on your hands” to steely-faced police.

They began to run as they approached the park’s entrance, sparking a hurried response from officers.

Police negotiator Inspector Anthony Montgomery-Clarke said she understood the protesters were addressing emotive topics.

“We understand entirely, and we certainly don’t take it personally,” he told AAP.

He praised the high level of cooperation between police and protesters and said it should become a template for future events.
